Any EMP attack would disrupt vital systems across the US including airports, railways, communication, the electrical grid, vital medical facilities, stop lights, sewage and many industrial facilities. The Graham Commission was created by the US congress in order to research the vulnerabilities of the country from these kinds of attacks. They have recommended that any vital electrical grid components be stored in protective installations in order for the country to remain functioning even after a nuclear or EMP attack. They found that the country is unprepared and infrastructure would likely quickly breakdown if an untoward even such as this would ever happen. The commission also discovered that the civilian population is terribly unprepared for this kind of disaster. There are still some ways you can do in order to protect your electronics from EMP attacks. Keeping them in aluminum or copper containers would likely prevent them from any damage from EMP. Using galvanized metal trash that is layered with thick cardboard can also be a useful protection against EMP.
An interesting way of protecting your electronic devices from EMP and electrical interference is by using EMP resistant bags known as Faraday bags. Faraday containers were originally an idea of protecting vital electronics such as laptops, phones and tablet computers from the devastating effects of EMP. You might think that getting one would make you look paranoid but in fact, having such as bag in the event of an EMP calamity would make you become more prepared than everyone else. In this day and age, being prepared with EMP protection means you are one step ahead of everyone else.
